A 1.5 inch auger bit in a hand brace sounds difficult, but this wood owl bit managed just fine - and turning it wasn’t an arm breaker. Great design. Pretty clean exit hole (with a backing board) in some dense iroko. Very pleased with this tool and this shop. Many thanks
Store owner replied:
Thanks George, great image demonstrating the WoodOwls in use too, cheers Lucy
Used to bore through mortises for green woodwork stool seat (old oak worktop) to fit cleft ash legs. Got through the oak easily . Finished tenons with wedges fitted snugly and looked good

I needed some deep holes for a stud bar fixing and this bit was perfect. Same quality as standard length bits. An excellent addition to the toolbox
Store owner replied:
So glad we could help out! Thanks so much for the 5 stars too! 😊 Cheers - Sophie
I have a number of these bits for oak framing. Beautifully made, sharp cutting edges. Runs true, no wobble cleanly machined flutes which extract the chips well. Easily bored deep holes in oak. Dont know what else to say really. Well worth the cost if looked after. Use the side handle on the drill tho!

Used plenty of Lewis auger bits over the years and this WoodOwl is by far one of the best I’ve had on green oak. Pulls through effortlessly, clears chips brilliantly and stays sharp even after repeated deep bores. I was hesitant at first to bore right through, but took a chance and its amazing how little tearout you get. In most cases I've experienced none at all. Accurate, clean holes with very little wandering. Proper quality bit for timber framing work. Will definitely be buying more sizes.

Thank you Joakim, it would be great to see a video or image of the WoodOwl on your project. Are you able to upload one? It is always great to see, cheers Lucy
Drilling 32mm holes in the Australian hardwood blackbutt is pretty much like trying to drill through hardened steel. The WoodOwl managed it with a bit of a struggle but the holes were round, not ovoid, and more than good enough for use as mortises.
If you're going to use them for chair or furniture making, just be aware that the snail and spurs are pretty short so you'd probably need to start drilling with the auger close to 90 degrees and lean into your required angle.
Store owner replied:
Thanks Richard, great to hear. Would love to see a video of the WoodOwl in action if you can upload one to the review? cheers Lucy
If you’re planning on hand drilling 32mm angled mortises in Australian hardwood such as blackbutt, a 3mm pilot hole is the go. The snail on these is pretty hefty and the extractives in eucalypts will clog the snail thread as the bit heats in use.
But good piece of kit.

So - at the age of 56 - I think it’s the most expensive drill bit I have ever purchased. I use it on green oak (wet wood) any it absolutely kills it! Really low vibration for a long bit and bores a beautiful hole without burning. Great bit of kit. Easily worth more that half a dozen cheap bits.
Store owner replied:
Tibor - Thank you so much for the great review! They really are amazing quality bits. Would love to see any images of what you're using it on! Cheer - Zia

I wish I'd known that augers of this quality existed years ago. It cuts straight and clean through 250mm green oak beams without pause. The only issue is that the chippings don't clear quickly enough and you'll need to back the drill out from time-to-time to help.
Combined with the Mafell drill guide it works an absolute treat. Even the exit holes are clean if you go carefully, which makes a huge time saving not marking out and drilling from both sides
Store owner replied:
Oh wonderful! So glad we could help - they're amazing quality aren't they! If you have any pics/video from on site we'd love to see! Cheers - Sophie

I havnt used the 32mm I bought it to fit the key barrel of Yale type door locks
the 13mm was working very well but unfortunately managed to hit a hidden screw i have got it working again and it is going very well but still a bit of damage to the sides

WoodOwls have a long life with the triple blade. Hitting a screw in wood is heart-breaking but glad you have still got use out of it. Would love to see a pic of you using it on site, if you can add this , cheers Lucy
Smooth action through my 8x8 beams and posts. Great drilling experience.
